Steichen House: Military Museum

The Steichen House was built in 1904 and was home to the parents of internationally renowned photographer Edward Steichen from 1904 to 1915.

 

The house also has a connection to Steichen’s sister, Lilian, and her husband, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and author Carl Sandburg.

 

Saved from demolition, the house was moved to Old Falls Village in December 2002 and restored for future generations.

 

In 2026, the Steichen House was rededicated with expanded exhibits focusing on the military history of the Menomonee Falls community. The house now features three military-history rooms honoring those who served:

• Gold Star Room — honoring local servicemen who lost their lives as a result of their military service during a conflict.

• Veteran Room — recognizing generations of men and women connected to Menomonee Falls who served and returned home.

• War Room — featuring uniforms, photographs, equipment, documents, and other military memorabilia offering a glimpse into the experience of military service.

 

The Steichen-Sandburg Room continues to preserve the history of the family associated with the house and the remarkable connection between Lilian Steichen and Carl Sandburg.

 

Today, the Steichen House serves as a place of remembrance, education, and preservation of Menomonee Falls military history.
