The Menomonee Falls Historical Society is committed to preserving, protecting, and disseminating the history of our community for current and future generations. As discussions continue regarding the potential transfer of ownership of Old Falls Village Park from the Village of Menomonee Falls to the Historical Society, we recognize that members and community residents may have questions about the opportunities ahead.

The following frequently asked questions provide information about the current discussions, the Historical Society’s goals, and the planning taking place to ensure the long-term preservation and success of Old Falls Village Park.

Is it true that the Menomonee Falls Historical Society is negotiating to purchase Old Falls Village Park?

Yes. The Menomonee Falls Historical Society is in discussions with the Village of Menomonee Falls regarding the possible purchase of Old Falls Village Park. These discussions are part of the Society’s ongoing commitment to preserving, protecting, and sharing the history of Menomonee Falls through the historic buildings, collections, and educational opportunities available at Old Falls Village.

No final agreement has been reached at this time.

Why is the Historical Society interested in owning Old Falls Village?

The Menomonee Falls Historical Society was established 60 years ago with the purpose of preserving and sharing the history of our community and assisting in the preservation and interpretation of the historic resources that would become Old Falls Village. Since its founding, the Historical Society has played an important role in preserving local history through preservation efforts, educational programming, collections, and community engagement.

The Village of Menomonee Falls was instrumental in the initial purchase of the Miller-Davidson House and, over the years, continued to support the preservation of local history by helping bring additional historic buildings to the site. Through the combined efforts of the Village, the Historical Society, and community volunteers, the collection of historic structures that became Old Falls Village developed into an important community resource. We are grateful for the Village’s vision, investment, and continued support in preserving this important part of Menomonee Falls history.

Like many communities, the Village continues to face the ongoing challenges associated with the long-term care, maintenance, and preservation of historic properties. The generous bequest received by the Historical Society created an opportunity to explore a new model for the future stewardship of Old Falls Village.

Will Old Falls Village become a private park?

No. The goal of the Historical Society is to continue Old Falls Village as a place where the community can experience local history through preservation, education, and public programming. While ownership would change, the intent is to maintain Old Falls Village as a community resource.

Details regarding future operations, access, events, and programming would be developed as part of the planning process.

What will happen to the Friends of Old Falls Village if the ownership of the park changes?

No decisions have been made regarding the future involvement of the Friends of Old Falls Village. The Historical Society recognizes and appreciates the contributions the Friends have made through their volunteer efforts, programs, events, and support of Old Falls Village.

The Historical Society plans to meet with representatives of the Friends to better understand their goals and expectations for the future. Any future arrangement will be considered with the long-term success of Old Falls Village as the primary goal and will be guided by the Historical Society’s mission.

What would ownership of Old Falls Village mean moving forward?

If the purchase moves forward, the Historical Society would assume responsibility for the long-term stewardship of the property, including preservation of the historic buildings, care of the grounds, and continued interpretation of local history.

The Historical Society is developing strategies for managing the property, meeting financial responsibilities, maintaining the buildings and grounds, supporting programming, and engaging volunteers. The goal is to establish a sustainable structure that ensures Old Falls Village continues to serve the community for generations to come.

How much money did the Historical Society receive in the inheritance, and is it enough to sustain the park and buildings?

The generous bequest received by the Historical Society created an opportunity to consider assuming greater responsibility for the future stewardship of Old Falls Village.

The Historical Society is developing a comprehensive operating plan for Old Falls Village that includes assessing the condition and preservation needs of the historic buildings, establishing preservation priorities, and creating long-term capital plans. The Society believes that ownership of Old Falls Village is financially sustainable and is committed to ensuring that the property receives the ongoing care, investment, and attention necessary to preserve it for future generations.

The Society remains committed to responsible stewardship of both the property and the resources entrusted to it.

Will reenactments and other favorite large events continue at Old Falls Village?

The Historical Society has a long history of hosting events and educational programs at Old Falls Village, including living history events. Over the years, some programs originally established through the Historical Society’s efforts continued under the direction of the Friends of Old Falls Village, allowing these traditions to remain part of the community’s experience at the park. The Society recognizes the value these events have brought to Old Falls Village and remains committed to providing opportunities for the community to experience history through engaging programs, reenactments, historical exhibits, and special events.

Looking ahead, the Society will continue exploring opportunities to offer a variety of programs and events that bring history to life while supporting Old Falls Village as a destination for historical education, community engagement, and preservation. Programming decisions will consider available resources, calendar availability, and opportunities to collaborate with community partners and outside organizations.

How will decisions about the future of Old Falls Village be made?

The Historical Society will approach ownership with careful planning, responsible stewardship, and a commitment to the community. Decisions regarding operations, preservation priorities, programming, and partnerships will be guided by the Society’s mission and the long-term success of Old Falls Village.

The Society values the input of its members, volunteers, community partners, and those who have supported Old Falls Village throughout its history.

How can members and the community support the future of Old Falls Village?

The continued success of Old Falls Village depends on the involvement and support of the community. Members and volunteers play an important role in preserving local history, supporting programs, maintaining collections, and sharing the stories of Menomonee Falls.

As plans develop, there will be opportunities for community members to participate, volunteer, attend programs, and support the ongoing preservation of this important historical resource.
